Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 2026

1. Introduction

refutor (“we”, “our”, or “us”) is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect when you use refutor, how we use it, and what rights you have over it. By using refutor you agree to the practices described here.

2. Data We Collect

  • Account information: Name and email address when you create an account.
  • Debate content: The topics, arguments, and session text you enter during Debate Coach and Mediator sessions. This content is used solely to generate AI responses and build your profile.
  • Usage data: Pages visited, features used, session duration, and device/browser type — collected through standard server logs and analytics.
  • Profile data: Argument patterns, style scores, and trend data generated from your sessions and stored to power your Evolving Profile.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use your data to:

  • Provide and improve the refutor service
  • Generate AI-powered feedback, verdicts, and coaching
  • Build and update your personal argument profile over time
  • Send you your weekly profile note (Sundays) if opted in
  • Analyse aggregate usage to improve the product
  • Comply with legal obligations

4. AI Processing

Debate content you submit is processed by a third-party AI provider. We do not share your name, email, or account details with AI providers. Content is transmitted securely and is not used to train third-party models under our agreements. We never display AI provider names (such as OpenAI or others) in the refutor interface.

5. Mediator Privacy

In Mediator sessions, each participant's submission is kept private from the other party until refutor delivers its verdict. We store both submissions temporarily to generate the shared verdict and retain them as part of your session history. The second participant does not need an account; their submission is linked to the session code only.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account and session data for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account and all associated data at any time from your profile settings. Anonymised, aggregate analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

7. Sharing & Disclosure

We do not sell your personal data. We may share data with:

  • AI processing providers — for generating responses (content only, no identity)
  • Infrastructure providers — for hosting and storage
  • Analytics providers — in aggregated, anonymised form
  • Legal authorities — if required by law

8. Your Rights

Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data
  • Object to or restrict certain processing
  • Export your data in a portable format

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@refutor.app.

9. Cookies

We use essential cookies for authentication and session management. We may use analytics cookies to understand how refutor is used. You can disable non-essential cookies in your browser settings; this will not affect core functionality.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or an in-app notice. Continued use of refutor after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
